Sketchfab loves our students. We really, really love you.

A bajillion (that’s totally a real number) students signed up for our free student PRO account this week. We saved you money. You sent us tons of emails filled with adoration.  (Doesn’t seem like an even trade. You’ll get us back one day, right?)

But because I love watching my CEO’s head explode as we hand out free accounts, help me get the word out! It’s a Facebook and Twitter Share our Free Student PRO account Challenge.  And yeah, you’ll win more free stuff.

The Facebook/Twitter Student SHARE Challenge

  • Write a great tagline about Sketchfab.
  • Share our free student PRO account blog post on Twitter and Facebook with your tagline. Do it now.
  • Tell your friends to like it, share it, retweet it, and favorite it.
  • Take a screen shot of your post(s) on Monday at midnight EST.
  • Comment on this blog post with your screenshot and Sketchfab username.
  • The screenshot with most combined likes/shares/retweets/favorites wins a Sketchfab care package!

A Sketchfab Care Package?  Yup.  Just like from your Mom, only it won’t have socks and undies.  (Unless we end up buying Sketchfab Underoos.)

Thank you for participating in our Antiques #3DST, and congrats to 3DDW, winner with the Antique Guiro Frog! He picked the theme for the next 3DST: Animals. You can follow the submission thread here.

This #3DST is a great occasion to give a try to our two new partners: Trnio and Itseez3D, both  great (free) apps letting you publish 3D scans directly to Sketchfab! As many of you asked for it, this is also the occasion to go back to a weekly 3DST :)

Prize: a $25 Shapeways 3D printing coupon. A unique chance to get your scan printed.

image

Rules, as usual:

  • 3D scan an Animal by Thursday, July 24th. It doesn’t need to be a real animal, 3D scanning an animal toy or sculpture is fine.
  • Share it on your own Sketchfab account by Thursday, July 24th, with #3DST9 in the title
  • The author of the model getting the most likes by the following Sunday is featured, wins a $25 Shapeways 3D printing coupon and gets to chose the following theme.

Enhance your Crowdfunding Campaign with Sketchfab

$

So you’re starting a crowdfunding campaign for your awesome new product?  Well, a great representation can make the difference between tons of money and, well, zero.

image

In this post, we’ll show you how Sketchfab can supercharge your campaign by using our real-time 3D viewer.

A Bit of Data

Sketchfab is used by some the most successful crowdfunding campaigns out there—including HEXO+ (see below), who reached their goal in 1 hour (yes, you read correctly) and then exceeded their goal by 25 times.

Hexo+ on Sketchfab

Breakdown:

  • Sketchfab has been used in 32 campaigns (at least, the ones we know about), including 3 of the top 15 most funded tech projects on Kickstarter: Lima, Structure and Hexo+.
  • 93% of those campaigns were funded
  • Campaigns using Sketchfab raised a total of $10m for an aggregated goal of $3.8m. Close to 3x more than anticipated.

So how can Sketchfab help?

In-depth Illustration

Sure, photos are a great way to showcase your product or prototype.   But why not go one step further?  By using Sketchfab’s 3D viewer, backers get a real-life product experience without your product even being real yet. Backers can zoom, pan, rotate, and experience your product at all dimensions and angles…all in glorious 3D.

Sketchfab’s viewer promotes your product with more visuals and less text.  Less reading. More product engagement. More backers.

How to make the most of Sketchfab’s 3D viewer:

  • Use our new annotations tool (guides viewers through your product’s best features and specifications)
  • Try showing an exploded 3D view (gives backers an in-depth look at the details of your product)
  • Showcase extras you’ll include in the future (or should you reach your stretch goal)
  • Include 3D models of special parts (for example, a customizable section of your product)

Here’s how Lima unveiled its Circuit Board on Kickstarter:

Circuit by Lima on Sketchfab

Before and after your campaign, Sketchfab can help

Sketchfab can help you to iterate faster.  By using private model sharing, a select group can be resourced for feedback. Then, once your model is ready to go public, use Sketchfab for marketing, blogs, news, and of course on your crowdfunding page.

Plus, Sketchfab 3D models work everywhere.  Our viewer embeds just like a youtube video, so backers never need to leave your campaign page when interacting with your model. The “donate” button is always one click away.

Your product, viral in 3D

Sketchfab is a new type of media to share.  Your enthusiastic investors can share your product in 3D anywhere (just like a youtube video). The more sharing, the more exposure.  With a Sketchfab 3D model, your campaign has a better chance of going viral.

3D is novel and can help get you noticed by the press or blogs. By including your Sketchfab model in press releases, journalists can showcase your 3D model in articles focused on your product…just as easily as you did on your campaign page.

Use our Community

A crowdfunding campaign unites a community around your product. By using Sketchfab’s technology, you’re joining forces with passionate makers.

  • More than 100,000 users on Sketchfab, in a strong community of 3D enthusiasts.
  • Tons of Sketchfab’s users are makers and hardware enthusiasts.  Just another channel of potential backers for your product.
  • We love to share the word about awesome projects, and will help you promote your campaign to our social channels: on twitter, facebook& G+ (with more than 10k relevant followers).
  • Need help from a 3D expert?  Sketchfab can help you network with the best 3D modelers and make the most of your design strategy.

Sketchfab is great for sharing 3D scans, CyArk included our viewer in their campaign, and it linked them to a community enthusiastic about 3D scanning:

A well-designed 3D model can help your campaign succeed. Our innovation will showcase your model and get your project noticed. Good luck with your project!

Baking Lighting in Blender Cycles

‘Baking’ lighting into your models is a great way to achieve realistic images that can still be displayed in real time. You can use area lights, ambient occlusion and even caustics this way - all of which are not available using our standard WebGL lighting.

One of the 3D apps that offers such a baking system is Blender. As of version 2.71, you can use the Cycles renderer and apply it’s super-realistic lighting to your models. In order to export such models to Sketchfab, you will have to take a few extra steps. Sketchfab community member Alexander E. Smith prepared this fantastic short video tutorial to take you through the process:

Check out some other fantastic examples of baked models:

Have you taken our new Annotations for a spin yet? They’re a great way to add more story and interaction to your designs!

In our new contest we’re challenging you to tell YOUR story using a 3D model of the earth. Here are some ideas to inspire you:

  • where you’ve lived

  • where you’ve been
  • your favorite places on earth

  • your favorite architecture

  • where your company’s offices are located

We’ll get you started with a 3D earth model that our lead designer Maurice created (download an OBJ or Blender file). Feel free to change it, add structures to it etc. It’s your world, so just have fun! Quick tip to enhance your entry: you can add urls in your annotations, to link to more info on the places you are pointing to.

The Sketchfab team will be picking their favorite entry, taking into account originality and social love.

So, how would you annotate your Earth? Are you ready? Go!

Rules:

  • Download the OBJ or Blender earth file if you don’t have an earth model already.

  • Share your Annotated Earth model on your own Sketchfab account by Friday, August 7, midnight EST with #AnnotatedEarth in the title

  • We will pick the winner on Monday, August 11th. We will base our choice on originality but also on the number of views and likes.

  • The winner will receive one year of Sketchfab Pro account, or a Sketchfab hoody if he already has a Pro account.

Good luck!

A new ZBrush-to-Sketchfab Exporter is out

$

0

Big news for ZBrush users: with the Zbrush summit coming this weekend, we’ve just released version 2 of the ZBrush exporter! Optimizing your models and publishing straight to Sketchfab is now easier than ever.

In addition to improved performance and reliability, the following new features are now included in the exporter plug-in:

  • Build UVs
  • Bake painting, normal, and ambient occlusion (AO) texture maps
  • Decimate (reduce polygon count)
  • Define a maximum texture size

Whether you’re new to the exporter or just need to upgrade, you can get it here.

This video walks through the new features and upload process. You can find more detailed instructions and screenshots below.

After installing the plug-in, you can find it in the ZPlugin menu. The process is fairly straightforward – just follow the tool’s steps in order.

1 - Account log

Enter your API key, which you can always find in your password settings. You can also check for updates to the exporter from this section.

image

2 - Prepare Maps

Next, build your UVs and bake the textures. Painting, normal, and AO maps are all enabled by default, but you can turn them on or off at the bottom of this section. Between build UVs and Bake, you may want to Restore Visibility, so you can see your whole model again. These steps may take some time, depending on complexity of the textures and the number of subtools in your scene.

image

3 - Decimate

Next, run Preprocess followed by the Decimate function. This can also take quite a while for big models. The default level of decimation is 25%, which you can change with the slider.

image

4 - Upload options

Enter a model title (required), description, tags, and mark it as private if necessary (PRO accounts only).

You can also set a maximum texture size here. This is especially useful for models with lots of big textures – we like to avoid browsers crashing due to VRAM limits :P

Finally, click Upload!

image

Here’s the result:

We hope you enjoy the update, and we’ll be looking forward to your uploads! As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to reply here or drop us a line.

Announcing Sketchfab cardboard aka #VR4ALL

image

When we saw the google cardboard initiative, we immediately fell in love with the concept, and started brainstorming on how we could bring this to our community. We are excited to announce we worked on our own version of the cardboard - the sketchboard, or the cardfab, you decide :)

image

What does it mean?

The Sketchfab cardboard lets you browse any Sketchfab model in virtual reality, using just a smartphone, a browser, and a piece of cardboard. It means you can have access to our gallery of more than 150,000 3D pieces of content in a more immersive way, at no cost. Ever wanted to dive into le Louvre statues?

Sketchfab Cardboard by JuanG3D on Sketchfab

How does it work?

  • Fold the Sketchfab cardboard
  • Get a mobile phone with WebGL support - the Sketchfab cardboard works great on a nexus 5 phone, and should work with any mobile phone.
  • Open any Sketchfab model and add /embed?cardboard=1 at the end of its url, for example https://sketchfab.com/models/885d9f60b3a9429bb4077cfac5653cf9/embed?cardboard=1
  • Put the phone in the Sketchfab cardboard slot
  • Experience virtual reality!

Sketchfab cardboard by alban on Sketchfab

Where to get it?

Right now, the Sketchfab cardboard is an experiment. We are giving them away to Sketchfab users at our Siggraph booth #544 this week, and are looking into the best way to get it to as many people as possible. If you are interested in getting one, or want to get notified when we release it to the public, feel free to drop us a line: hello@sketchfab.com

Thanks!

Grow your own vegetables at home with 3Dponics

$

0

image

3Dponics is a low cost, open source 3D-printable hydroponics system. Once installed, you can easily grow your own vegetables at home – even inside or on a balcony!

When we learned they were using Sketchfab to explain their components to their community, we had a chat with them.

Can you tell us a bit more about 3Dponics?

3Dponics is the first 3D-printable hydroponics system, the first Internet-enabled 3Dponics system and, soon, it will be completely solar-powered (possible because of its small electrical footprint).

The system is made of 3D-printed components and a few other recyclable or easily sourced parts. We encourage the public to download 3Dponics parts for free and build their own system, because we want you to benefit reap the benefits and join our community of users.

One way we’re achieving all of this is by first uploading our files and making our models visible in 3D on Sketchfab. We want you to really see your 3Dponics parts before printing them, just as you would an item in a store.

We certainly benefit using Sketchfab to publish our 3D-printable 3Dponics parts online and so do you—here we’ll explain how.

Why is it important to show your parts in 3D?

Not everyone who’s keen on 3Dponics is familiar with a hydroponics system or the parts required for setting 3Dponics up. This is why it’s important that users are able to see the parts clearly and from every angle before they decide to order, print and build.

Therefore, it is comforting for us, the designers, that every visitor on our site can easily access our models. Simply scroll down the main page and you’ll find 3Dponics’ 3Dprintable parts, the mains ones and the optional upgrades.

We give visitors the option of clicking to see the models more clearly in 3D on Sketchfab. It’s so simple and fast uploading our models to Sketchfab and we can upload as many as we wish, so it’s no problem to include this viewing option on our site.

What’s more, if we wanted, we could directly embed the Sketchfab viewer on our website.

How does Sketchfab help you reach more people?

We are community-oriented. After all, our main mission launching 3Dponics on Kickstarter was—and still is—to establish a community of users. Right now we have nearly 150 members listed on our site map, and we expect this number to increase in the coming months.

Because catering to and expanding our community of users is a priority, we appreciate the fact that users can easily share our models with their social and professional networks via Sketchfab. Just below images of the models, you can click to embed, share or like the model. This is a great way for you to get the word out on the designs you love.

When your friends or acquaintances with similar interests see that you’ve “liked” or shared certain designs, they are more likely to check them out, thereby helping to expand our community of users.

Our ultimate goal is to work together to improve the 3Dponics system. In order to that, we need you first to like what you see and have no trouble getting started. With Sketchfab—thanks to its clarity and user-friendliness—we are well on our way to achieving this.

Thanks guys, and best of luck with your project!

Last week was a bit crazy, as 4 of us from the Sketchfab team attended Siggraph, the largest Computer Graphics trade show, in Vancouver. It was our second Siggraph, and it was a blast!

We had a small but nice booth, just facing the booth of our Blender friends. We also had an amazing Perceptive Pixel touch screen (thank you Microsoft!), just the best way to show gorgeous 3D content in all its glory.

image

Here is a breakdown of what we were up to:

We announced PBR support

Physically Based Rendering also know as PBR, is the next generation of rendering. With PBR, models materials are more accurate and work great under all lighting conditions. In collaboration with our friends from Allegorithmic, we demoed experimental PBR support on the web with Sketchfab.

image

We released our own cardboard VR kit

We gave away 500 Sketchfab Cardboard VR kits, letting you browse any Sketchfab model in VR.

image

We announced our integration with Smart3Dcapture

You can now publish your 3D scans directly from Smart3Dcapture to Sketchfab, more on that soon!

image

We presented at the WebGL BOF

It’s great to see how WebGL (the tech Sketchfab is using to display 3D graphics without a plugin) is used by more and more people in the industry, and getting better and better support. We had a chance to present Sketchfab at the WebGL BOF, here is our presentation:

We 3D scanned the crowd

As we had just received our awesome Structure sensor, we put together a mobile 3D scanning booth, and used Itseez3D to scan anyone who wanted! Check out Ton from Blender below :)

All in all, we just had a great time :)

We can’t wait for Siggraph 2015 in LA, our booth is already booked, see you all there!

Sketchfab 2014 Survey: What you told us

$
0
0

image

Back in June we asked you for your thoughts on Sketchfab. Over 700 people filled out our survey (which was really long, so thanks!!) and it took us a fair while to plough through all the data.

What we found was humbling: your response was amazingly positive and you found Sketchfab truly helpful and enjoyable. Thanks!

We also had a lot of constructive feedback, and many of your issues are already being discussed within our team. In fact we can use some more help with one of those, but more on that later. Let’s first share some of your stories!

First of all, who are you? In rough lines, the majority of our users is a professional (we also learned that many of you use Sketchfab to communicate with clients during a project):

  • 45% Professional

  • 30% 3D Enthusiast or hobbyist

  • 20% Student

And why do you come to Sketchfab? Not surprisingly, to share your 3D work! But also to create a portfolio or just to enjoy being inspired:

  • 30% To share work with others

  • 15% Sketchfab is incredibly easy to use

  • 10% To create an online portfolio of my work

  • 10% To explore and be inspired

What do you enjoy doing most? There are some interesting areas here:

  • 40% Modeling in general

  • 15% Architecture

  • 10% 3D Scanning

  • 10% Animation

And this result is directly reflected in the next question: what other features would you like to see on Sketchfab?

  • 25% Animation

  • 9% Integration with 3D Printing services

  • 5% Extended lighting options

  • 5% Physically Based Rendering (check!)

Now while discussing adding animation features with our team, we found that we had many questions about which types of animations to support, what kind of tools you’d require etc. And instead of just diving based on guesses, we were hoping to ask you one more time for your input: how would you use animation on Sketchfab? (don’t worry, this one is nowhere near as long as the original survey ;-).

Thanks again for helping us to continue making Sketchfab even better!
