In Inside Gaming, we invite Sketchfab game developers to talk about their work. We asked 5 members of the team from Fox3D Studios to talk about their upcoming project, “Subnautica.” Today’s insights are from Dmitry Sorokin, Senior 3D Artist at Fox3D Studios. Read Part 1 here.

Hello, my name is Dmitry Sorokin, I’ve been working on the Subnautica almost from the very beginning, when the first sketches and ideas appeared.

Inside Subnautica

I was very excited to be invited to take part in this project. And I agreed without a second thought, because I knew it wasn’t just a simple outsourcing job for another studio or project, but full participation in the project, from top to bottom.

I really enjoyed working on main game objects like the Cyclop submarine, bases, damaged versions of the spaceship and all the sections inside them. Well, besides all of this, it was fun to create all kinds of alien flora and fauna of the underwater world.

There were many difficulties and hidden pitfalls while developing. Sometimes we had to rework one or another object many times. We were receiving ideas in working order, and sometimes we came up with our own ideas. It is a really nice feeling when the developer considers your opinion as well as your ideas. It gives you the feeling that you’re a part of this project – that you are caught up in it and you’re giving a piece of yourself to it.

Sketchfab Saves Us A Lot of Time

When we discovered Sketchfab, it helped us a lot to improve our work process. We could see objects in almost the same way as they looked in the game. It is pleasant and convenient to check models, even just to lay eyes on them. Everything is shown with textures, and effects, with reflections. It is almost not necessary to adjust anything. Everything is simple and quick. And it saves us a lot of time.

It was interesting to take a part in the creation of a cinematic trailer as well. When each of us brought a thought or idea, it was heard. It was a really cool experience. And I’m proud of taking part in the development of this game.

Tips For Beginners

For those who want to do games, I can advise only one thing: live for it and give yourself completely. After all, it’s always pleasant to play when you know that you made this game yourself. And it is even more pleasant when people are excited about what you made. It is an unforgettable feeling!
