We have liftoff! Sketchfab now supports Kerbal Space Program models

0
0

Are you creating your own parts for Kerbal Space Program? You can now upload them straight to Sketchfab and share them online with your friends - we have just added support for *.MU files.

Sample Station by Kerbal Space Program on Sketchfab

Just create a ZIP file of the part’s folder and upload it (make sure you include the texture maps!). Within seconds you’ll have a sharable, fully interactive 3D model that you can embed everywhere on the web, including the KSP forums!

This feature has been made possible by the open source *.MU importer for Blender by KSP community member Taniwha.

There’s already a fair bit of KSP content on our site, go explore!

Sketchtalk: Patrix' Amazing Minecraft Buildings

0
0

When Patrix posted his Minecraft models on Sketchfab, he made our jaws drop. So, it’s time to learn a little more about him!

Cathedral by patrix on Sketchfab

Could you introduce yourself to our readers: Who are you and where are you from?

I am a student from Taiwan studying 3D animation and modeling.

Can you tell us about what aspects of 3D you specialize in?

I never “specialize” in any aspect, I just learn whatever needed. However I’m better at modeling and texturing comparing to other things.

How did you first get started? What was that ‘I want to do this’ moment?

There are a lot of Minecraft animations and builds on the internet, but I never saw anyone showcasing their creations by uploading the exported model onto a 3D model browsing website with baked textures before, so I just gave it a try using my own buildings.

Do you have any academic training or are you self-taught?

I had some basic academic training, but they are more like an introduction and the spark of my interest in 3D. Most of these skills are self-taught.

Tell us a little bit more about your workflow/process?

I tend to switch between different softwares because I was never fluent in any. First I cleaned up the Minecraft map using MCEdit, fill up caves and delete unnecessary blocks. I split the map into two versions, one with all the opaque blocks and one without. Then export them separately into 3d models using Mineways. Re-unwrapped the UV’s in Zbrush (less likely to crash when handling such high poly count), giving each polygon a unique UV essential for texture baking. Then baked diffuse texture from the original textured models onto the newly unwrapped models. Setup some basic lighting and baked AO, gradient(for fake fog effect), normal(for water waves), and various lightmaps. Finally, composite all the textures in Photoshop. I’m experimenting and perfecting the workflow with each project, so it’s subject to change.

Mayan Temple by patrix on Sketchfab

What project(s) are you working on right now?

I’m currently working on a personal project for sculpting practice. I might start another Minecraft build once it’s finished.

Talk a little bit in detail about your favorite model you currently have posted on Sketchfab?

Although the Cathedral model is the most famous one, my favorite model was actually the Mayan Temple. The Mayan/Aztec style is not only my favorite, but is also filled with rectangular patterns, which suits Minecraft very well. A lot of afford and thought went into both aesthetic and functionality of the build, even more than the Cathedral! Spending hours googling reference photos of various Mayan/Aztec style architectures, adding fantasy elements while staying true to the style, incorporating various redstone mechanism into the build, bugfixing while players tested the build. The Mayan-calendar-esque arena floor alone is hours of work, putting stairs together into a aesthetically pleasing maze-like pattern while making sure there are no holes that players will accidentally fall into. Although the model export was flawed due to inexperience, it is still my favorite one.

What would be your personal advice to someone getting started in 3D?

Internet is your best tutor, passion is your best motivation.

Minecraft Castle by patrix on Sketchfab

What are your thoughts on 3D printing, Are/Do you plan to work with it?

I’ve already done several modeling cases for 3D printing. It is a magical medium for artists to bring their imagination into real life!

How did you come across Sketchfab and how does it helped with your project(s)?

There are several websites that offers 3D model browsing, but Sketchfab is more user-friendly in my opinion. It is a more interactive and immersive way to showcase your works than pictures, videos or prerendered 360 turntable.

What inspires you?

Other people’s creations on the internet, or just random thoughts.

Thanks Patrix!

Website Update: What’s new on Sketchfab this week?

0
0

This week we’re releasing some behind the scenes improvements. We’re taking a first step towards future improvements, and have added support for Kerbal Space Program parts!

Kerbal Space Program support

We have also added KSP’s *.MU file format to our list of supported files to make uploading of parts easier. And yes, before you ask, we’d also love to support uploading *.craft files - we’re looking to see if that’s possible!

Website performance

Crania Anatomica Filigre by Joshua Harker on Sketchfab

We’re currently attacking performance on two fronts:

  1. Data compression: we’re doing a much better job at compressing any geometry data we’re sending your way now. This will be most obvious with large models of course. Can you tell the difference?

  2. Website performance: we have taken a first step towards making the overall website faster as well. With this week’s release we have laid the groundwork for optimizations that we’ll be working on over the next couple of months to make Sketchfab even more enjoyable to use. As such, you won’t be seeing an immediate speed upgrade this week, but we’ll be adding more and more improvements soon.

Like I said: stay tuned, we’ll be putting a lot of effort into this over the next few weeks.

Meet the team behind Hive Wars game !

0
0

Today we meet Hive Wars' creators Daniel Oprea and David Scadden, from Third World Pixel. Daniel and David are part of Sketchfab community and we felt like bringing to light their work.

Hive Wars is a team-based strategy game set in the brutal micro world of insects. Bees versus Wasps fight over territory to secure resources, ending with a climactic battle to eliminate the rival hive. Players must choose between one of two factions, Sitan (wasps) & Tuvenian (bees). The game is set in the near future after nuclear war has annihilated the human race.

image

#1 What’s going on in Third World Pixel studio right now ? What are your latest news ?

(Daniel Oprea) We have just returned from Eurogamer Uk or EGX where we showcased our game and people really liked it. We had lots of insect killings and lots of discussions with the gamers about what ideas they like or dislike about our game. In short, a lot of feedbacks from gamers, positive feedbacks to our surprise. Right now we are working on an Alpha demo of Hive Wars game for the public. We have managed to get ourselves to a point when we can say that we are getting seen by the gaming world and now all we need to keep interest is this demo. We currently have some financial troubles that we will overcome and when we do, it’s full time working on Hive Wars once again. It’s not easy being indie.

image

#2 Where does the idea of Hive Wars come from ? Where does the inspiration come from usually when you decide to create a new game ?

(Daniel Oprea) Just like any good idea, it came in the middle of the night while the game designer (Dave) and I were chatting online. He was playing Day Z and I was about to close the PC preparing to go to sleep when I stumbled upon videos about how bees are disappearing and what problems this will cause for us humans. Apparently we are all going to become extinct if this happens. On that note we inversed roles and we killed off all the humans in a great war and left the planet full of insects that have adapted to a life without people. After that we just exploded with ideas on the chat window until dawn. We met in the morning face to face at a pub and started writing ideas and making sketches on paper.

The inspiration is all around us. Just look around and you will see how real world gives you free material for creating video games. It can be an emphasis on a real problem like our game or an idea with no apparent logic but fun as hell like Goat simulator.

image

#3 The world of indie games seems to be challenging, how long is the journey to make a game and release it to the world ?

(David Scadden)When we finalized the original idea for our game we only had four months until the develop conference in Brighton. Dan started on the models while I drilled out a design document, then we had the inevitable problem of finding a capable programmer who was not afraid to handle such a short deadline. After many turn downs an amateur programmer came to our aid and managed to get a working prototype working in under three weeks. Most of the assets have been created and the mechanics have been finalized so if we could find an expert programmer and pull in some hard cash this game could be done in a couple months. Currently we are facing some down time due to personal commitments, but this break will be used to develop some new content which will be released gradually to the public in order to stimulate interest. Given our current situation if things go as planned hopefully July 2015 will be the release date.

image

#4 What are the main problems you encounter today in the development of Hive Wars ?

(David Scadden) Currently our only problem is that none of our backgrounds are in programming. When we got together we had backgrounds in film, advertising and art. It was a huge learning curb for both of us, most of the programmers we interviewed said our idea was too ambitious or it would never work. When our calls for help were answered we got a guy who was just starting out as a programmer, he took on the project to help us and himself. So it became a new learning process for the three of us. We are eternally grateful for the programmer showing up when he did. After EGX our programmer had to go back to university so now our second problem is that we once again have no programmer. If there was another problem is was that we never had a stable base of operations to work from. But despite all these problems we still managed to get a working game out in under 5 months including a closed test of the pre-alpha on steam.

#5 A bit of technical stuff now, what softwares do you use ?

(Daniel Oprea)– These are all the programs we used:

- Adobe Photoshop for all textures and interface assets.

- Adobe Flash for interface prototypes.

- Autodesk 3dsMax for 3D characters, animation and magic.

- Adobe After Effects for making teasers and trailers.

- Adobe Audition for sound editing.

- Unity as the game engine.

- Autodesk FormIt3D stage concept design

Lucky for us, we know quite a wide range of programs and it serves us well. In the future we might add a new one to the list, Unreal Engine. Yes, we will move the game to Unreal Engine. “wink”

TECH-Wasp (Hive Wars video game character) by yoshistory on Sketchfab

#6 Can you tell our readers what does a typical day at Third World Pixel look like ? You guys have fun in the workplace ?

(Daniel Oprea) Our studio, as you called it in the first question, is not a studio in the full sense. We currently are 3 people that meet regularly at a pub or a public place to fix and discuss our game. An Art director, a Game designer and a Programmer that joined us recently, lucky for us.

Most of the time it’s just me and Dave that meet and work in one improvised place with our laptops. We usually meet up in the morning and we have to look at the project management system Dave set up, this helps everyone know what they have to do so no one gets whipped (yet) but we are so driven to complete this game that we often over achieve our deliverables.

As art director I am constantly adding new models and graphics to the game. Dave sits there and grinds out possible game mechanics and concepts while he feeds the fans on the internet. Nikolay (programmer) hides from the sun and only comes out when we absolutely need him to make the mission to meet up. While this is all happening we listen to healthy amounts of old school game sound tracks and compare action figures.

Being an indie game developer is like walking on a wire with no protection, no other wires to keep you safe in case you fall. It is really fun to do it and it is really great when people like your work, but no one knows the real pain and cost of your effort.

#7 What would you recommend to someone who wants to start video game development?

(David Scadden) Firstly I would recommend a good history of gaming across all platforms and ages, this provides the experience for a well-informed design and hopefully a unique idea. You want to create something you want to play so when you get that money making idea it should be drawn up and planned out. Concept art and illustrations must be generated to help explain the mechanics and game play. Ask your friends what they think and then when you are confident enough the idea should then be posted online in order to get feedback (Be ready for negative and constructive criticism), this will help you see if the idea has any interest and help you decide how to proceed next. After three months of development we added Hive Wars to the Steam Concept Greenlight page to see what would happen, lucky it was well received and many people contributed ideas to the development. Being part of the online community is vital, showing your idea and generating an interest in others will attract all kinds of people willing and wanting to help you.

The communities at Indie DB has been the most rewarding for this and I recommend starting a project there once you have a concrete plan.

#8 Sketchfab recently released some features , like the possibility to add some annotations to your models, to have an exporter directly in your softwares, and more recently, to download some models from the platform like assets and use it in your own games. What do you think of this ?

(David Scadden) During the development Dan had uploaded our Wasp and Bee models so that we could show case them at Indie DB, with the added annotations we could explain various parts on our models in a visual style that screams “professional” and I would defiantly recommend this feature to anyone who is serious about displaying their art work.

For the upcoming game developer the download option is great feature. As not everyone can create 3D models (like Daniel) this is a brilliant way to help create prototypes & demos for early concepts. For future projects if I need to create a pitch or a plan to show potential financial backers this would be ideal. It will save time for a quick mock up concept and could lead to further work down the line. This is a great way to connect with artists and by adding their models to a game/concept helps to showcase and generate exposure to their portfolios.

(Daniel Oprea) I remember the first time I discovered Sketchfab and said to myself that this is the most awesome and useful thing when it comes to showcasing 3D models on your browser. I thought it is unique on the web, to my knowledge at least. For the first time I was able to actually put my 3d model instead of a render photo. It was Boss!

Then, you guys started to add more things to it like an exporter directly from 3dsMax which made exporting so easy and smooth, also annotations that are very useful if you need to provide extra info of your model right on the actual model. All of this is great stuff!

Sketchtalk: Onur Yildiz' 3D Scanned Fossils

0
0

Onur Yildiz, or ‘3D Fossils’ on Sketchfab, has a collection of close to two hundred 3D captured fossils on our site - some are over 240 million years old! What drives him? Let’s find out!

TURTLE by 3D Fossils on Sketchfab

Could you introduce yourself to our readers: Who are you and where are you from?

I graduated in biology and I’m interested in palaeontology, but in profession I am a photographer in Turkey.

How did you first get started? What was that ‘I want to do this’ moment?

Before I started this work, 3D Photogrammetry was a new field for me and I didn’t know anything about it. One day my friend who knows I’m interested in fossils, sent me a message : “look at this, they did it !”

At first I didn’t understand after I clicked the link: I saw some fossils and they were in 3d and they used Sketchfab. It was the my first introduction to Sketchfab and 3D Photogrammetry.

After a couple of weeks I borrowed some fossils from my collector friends and I start to make fossils 3d…

Now I have almost 1.000 models. But most of them need to retouch with 3d softwares in order to correct details and make a most similar model with real one. after all process done I share them on Sketchfab. Sketchfab is fast, there is no useless details and the code or script I mean the engine behind the page is pretty good.

CROCODILE by 3D Fossils on Sketchfab

What is your drive for creating this collection?

Fossils are rare items and you can’t see them often on your usual life so I want to show fossils rather go to museum, they can see fossils and look at hundreds of million years ago just one click !

We don’t sale the fossils but some people call me and want me to do the same thing about their stuff, and I say why not cause people desire to see their interested products in 3D.

Can you tell us a bit about your workflow?

I use PhotoScanPro software. First I take some pictures at proper angles, it depends the volume, shape and area of fossils, with my DSLR. Then I put them in my computer and filter the blurry photos carefully, after about 45 min later i have the 3d model as well.

PENGUIN by 3D Fossils on Sketchfab

What are your plans for this collection? Are you considering 3D printing them?

I didn’t think it before but it can perform for education. So if i receive some demands from schools it can thinkable.

What would be your personal advice to someone getting started with 3D scanning?

Don’t take blurry shots !

If anyone need help they can reach me freely…

Thanks Onur!

Television set design with Blender and Sketchfab

Omar Domenech helped visualize a television set for the a local television channel in the Dominican Republic. Hear how he feels Sketchfab helps him sell projects to his clients.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself?

I’m Omar Domenech, 29 years old, a Graphic Artist from Santo Domingo, The Dominican Republic, a small island in the Caribbean, the biggest of the islands around the area, but small nonetheless. I graduated from Advertisement and currently work at a Financial Institution here in my country, doing all their art work. The tools I mainly use on the job are Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects, but about two years ago I discovered Blender and 3D in general and instantly got hooked. Websites like CG Cookie and BlenderNation helped me immensely with the training, keeping up the enthusiasm and staying in touch with the community in general. And what started as passion, by chance quickly turned into great opportunities for freelance work in all sorts of fields, from Arch Viz to VFX and spanning into other software such as 3DS Max and V-Ray. But I find immense value in Open Source tools such as Blender, specially in today’s Corporate climate.

TV Set Televida by Omar Domenech on Sketchfab

Who was the client for this project, and how did you get the job?

I have a cousin who works in TV and Movie Production, he knew I was delving into the world of 3D. His boss does Art Direction and they needed someone who could do visualizations for Props and Sets in their projects. So I got the chance of doing a couple of jobs and have been working with them sporadically. One of those jobs was for a Christian TV Network, they needed five sets for their programming, and I got to take part in the process of creating such sets.

What was involved in the creation of this virtual set?

Creative minds, an always tight deadline, a lot of back and forth and 3D software to bring those ideas into the real world. It’s a huge benefit to be able to show a client an accurate representation of the real thing, it speeds up the decision making process and solidifies the vision inside their heads.

image

A render of the set design (Blender/Cycles)

Can we see it on television somewhere?

Hehe, probably. If you’re ever in Santo Domingo for vacation you can catch it on TV, it’s in the local broadcasting channels of the Island but programming here is so bad sometimes you wish TV had never been invented. If you ever come here and muster the courage, tell me how it goes ;)

How did Sketchfab help you with this project?

Well, when I worked on this project I wasn’t aware of Sketchfab, I didn’t have the chance to use it, but it really is an amazing tool for showcasing your work. Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating that not even a realistic render is enough for a client to fully appreciate or understand a design, frequently people just see the render as just an image, but seeing the model and easily interacting with it in its full 3D glory it’s a whole other level, it even puts a big smile on their faces. The same happened to all of us when we first started messing around with 3D, I remember that just seeing a wireframe was an eye opener. Sketchfab will quickly become an essential piece for displaying my 3D models and presenting my work, now everyone can see exactly what it is that I do. Computer Graphics encompasses a wide range of fields, there is still so much stuff to learn.

Support Ninja, James and I (Community Evangelist, Anne) were able to show off Sketchfab at Maker Faire on the 21st and it was pretty exciting!

In just two days we scanned over 200 heads and turned them into Sketchfab models.  In between passing out a million fliers (or at least it felt like it) we were able to interact with some of you Makers and heard how you all use the site. It was great to meet all of you that came out and see your real life 3D faces. Those of you who went, let us know how you liked it and make sure to check out the heads here!

Here are some awesome cool pics from the weekend if you want to check them out!

We’re back with the best embeds of the week! We have been really impressed with the quality and quantity of the 3D models so it was a tough choice. However, we had to make it, so, here are the ones that made the cut.

These 3D marvels are awesome so keep being #Sketchfabulous.

Even tweet about it and get your friends involved because no one wants FOMO (fear of missing out).

And hey, if you want to be featured as a 3D all-star next week, shoot us an email at: Hello@Sketchfab.com

Featured Embed:

This week’s featured embed is a brand new product released by HTC, the revolutionary RE Camera. The RE is in between a flip camera and a go pro that is compact and waterproof. Pretty cool, huh? So check out the really cool features and different colors; green, whiteorange, and navy. If you want to see more of HTC’s products check out their Sketchfab page here.

More Cool Embeds:

Make sure to you remember to embed, it looks really cool and it is super easy! Click the share button under the model and BOOM copy + paste and you are done.

Have a #Sketchfabulous week,
